Dal recipe | Quick and Easy Paruppu kuzhambu | Pappu charu recipe

Dal recipe is high protein food widely used for lunch and dinner throughout Asia. It goes well with rice along with ghee and also with roti. We can prepare it in thick or flowing consistency based on our preference. I prefer it having with rice and fried potatoes; I would recommend you to try this combination. Now, lets get into the recipe,

Servings: 4 

Ingredients: (1 cup = 240ml)

For pressure cooking:

¾ cup toor dal

2.5 cups water

2 tomatoes, medium size, chopped

3 green chillies slit and remove seeds

4 garlic cloves

½ tsp turmeric powder

¼ tsp asafoetida/ hing

1 tsp oil

Salt to taste

 

For tempering:

1 tbsp oil

½ tsp mustard seeds

¼ tsp fenugreek

Few curry leaves

2 dry red chillies, broken

 

Preparation:

  • Wash ¾ cup toor dal and add in to the pressure cooker, add 2.5 cups of water
  • Followed by tomatoes, green chilli, garlic, turmeric, asafoetida, 1tsp oil and pressure cook for four whistles in medium flame
  • Once steam gets released open the lid, add salt and mash the cooked dal slightly
  • If the dal is too thick add little water to adjust consistency and cook for 2 to 3 minutes
  • For tempering, heat the pan and add 1 tbsp oil; splutter ½  tsp mustard, ¼ tsp fenugreek, few curry leaves and 2 dried red chilli
  • Add the tempering to the dal
  • Finally garnish with coriander leaves.

Paruppu kuzhambu or pappu charu is ready to serve with rice or chapathi
