Keerai kuzhambu

For all those fans of popeye out there, here comes your favourite recipe, spinach!! It is very rich in essential vitamins which make it a very good choice for all age groups. Now, let’s get into the recipe,

 

Servings: 4

Ingredients: (1 cup = 240ml)

1 cup toor dal

3 cups water

2 tomatoes, medium size, chopped

3 green chillies

4 garlic cloves

½ tsp turmeric powder

1/8 tsp asafoetida/ hing

200 gms spinach(palak), chopped

Pinch tamarind

1 tsp oil

Salt to taste

 

For tempering:

1 tbsp oil

½ tsp mustard seeds

1 onion, finely chopped

1 dry red chilli, broken

 

Preparation:

  • Wash 1 cup toor dal and add in to the pressure cooker, add 3 cups of water
  • Furthermore, add tomatoes, green chilli, garlic, turmeric, asafoetida, tamarind, spinach and 1tsp oil
  • Then pressure cook for four whistles in medium flame
  • Once steam gets released open the lid, add salt and mash the cooked dal and palak well
  • For tempering, heat the pan and add 1 tbsp oil; splutter ½  tsp mustard
  • add onion and one dried red chilli, sauté until golden brown in medium flame
  • Add the tempering to the dal

Keerai kuzhambu is ready to serve with rice!!

Note:

  • Please don’t fry the onions on high flame, it may not cook properly. So fry on medium flame, it gives nice flavour and also enhances the taste.
  • You can also use any variety of spinach
